Destination Guide

Qatar is a compact Gulf country rather than an island, with Doha as its main employment and lifestyle centre. Hospitality, aviation, retail, construction, healthcare, education, technology and professional services offer regular opportunities, especially for candidates with international experience. Arabic is the official language, while English is widely used at work. Qatar is multicultural and generally safe, but visitors should respect local Islamic customs, dress modestly in public places and avoid public displays of affection. Life is modern and convenient, with excellent malls, restaurants, beaches, museums and desert activities. Summers are extremely hot, so indoor facilities and air-conditioning are important. Most overseas employees need employer sponsorship and a residence permit; the employer commonly arranges work authorization, medical checks and related paperwork. Before relocating, confirm accommodation, transport, health insurance, annual leave, flights and whether meals or allowances are included in the employment package.
