Destination Guide

Hong Kong is a compact, highly connected city with strong opportunities in hotels, tourism, restaurants, finance, retail, technology and professional services. Its culture blends Chinese traditions with international influences, and Cantonese is widely used alongside English and Mandarin. The lifestyle is energetic, convenient and urban, with excellent public transport, diverse dining, shopping, hiking trails and nearby islands and beaches. Housing can be expensive, especially in central districts, so many workers choose locations connected by the MTR. Foreign nationals normally need an employment visa arranged with support from their employer before starting work; applications generally require a confirmed offer, suitable qualifications and proof that the role meets immigration requirements. New arrivals should budget for rent, deposits, transport and healthcare, and check tax, visa and employment conditions carefully. Hong Kong’s humid summers and typhoon season are also important practical considerations.
