Destination Guide

The United Arab Emirates is not an island, but it is a federation of seven emirates with major opportunities in hospitality, tourism, aviation, retail, finance, technology and events. Dubai and Abu Dhabi offer the broadest employment markets, while Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah also have growing hotel and resort sectors. The culture combines Islamic traditions, Emirati hospitality and a highly international workforce. Respectful dress, public behavior and awareness of Ramadan customs are important. Lifestyle options include beaches, desert activities, shopping, dining and a lively expatriate community, although housing, schooling and transport can be expensive. Foreign employees generally require employer-sponsored work authorization and residence visas; medical checks and identity registration are commonly part of the process. Employers may provide accommodation or a housing allowance, insurance, annual leave and flights, but terms should be confirmed before accepting an offer. UAE income tax is generally not charged on individual salaries.
