Destination Guide

Sri Lanka offers opportunities in hotels, resorts, restaurants, tourism, events, travel services, technology and international business. Colombo is the main commercial centre and provides the broadest professional job market, while Galle, Kandy, Bentota and the eastern and southern coasts offer strong hospitality employment. The culture blends Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslim and colonial influences, with Buddhism playing an important role. Employees generally experience a friendly, family-oriented lifestyle, tropical weather, affordable local food and good access to beaches, wildlife and historic sites. Foreign nationals normally need an employer-sponsored work permit or appropriate employment visa before starting work; tourist visas do not authorise employment. The employer usually supports documentation, though requirements can include passport copies, qualifications, medical checks and police clearance. Relocating staff should confirm salary, service charge, accommodation, transport, insurance, taxes, leave and visa responsibility in writing before accepting an offer.
