Destination Guide

Hong Kong is a compact, energetic city with a strong hospitality, tourism, retail, finance and professional-services job market. Opportunities are concentrated on Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories, with hotels, restaurants and attractions frequently recruiting service staff. Cantonese is widely spoken; English is important in hotels and international workplaces, while Mandarin is also useful. The lifestyle combines dense urban neighbourhoods, excellent public transport, diverse dining, shopping and nightlife with beaches, hiking trails and outlying islands. Rents can be high, so employer accommodation or shared housing may be worth considering. Overseas workers generally need an approved employment visa before starting work; the employer normally sponsors the application and the role must meet immigration requirements. Prepare recognised qualifications, references, medical or identity documents and proof of employment. New arrivals should arrange housing, an Octopus card, banking and local mobile service.
