Destination Guide

Indonesia is an archipelago with varied opportunities across Java, Bali, Sumatra, Sulawesi and other islands. Java, including Surabaya and Jakarta, has strong demand in hotels, restaurants, manufacturing, technology and services. Bali is especially active in tourism, hospitality, wellness and entertainment, while resort areas such as Lombok and the Riau Islands offer seasonal opportunities. Indonesian culture values courtesy, teamwork, family ties and respect for religious traditions; workplaces may use Indonesian and some English. Living costs vary considerably, with Surabaya generally more affordable than Bali’s major tourist areas. Foreign workers normally need an employer-sponsored work permit and appropriate limited-stay visa, commonly arranged through the company before employment begins. Regulations can change, so verify requirements with Indonesian immigration or an authorized adviser. Relocating candidates should budget for housing, transport, health insurance and document processing, and should confirm salary, accommodation, meals and benefits in writing.
