Destination Guide

Sri Lanka offers opportunities in hotels, resorts, restaurants, tourism, events, travel services and related support industries, particularly in Colombo, the southern coast, Kandy and the Cultural Triangle. The culture combines Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslim and colonial influences, with strong traditions of hospitality, family life, religion and local festivals. Lifestyle varies from busy urban living in Colombo to a more relaxed pace in beach and inland resort areas. English is widely used in tourism, while Sinhala and Tamil are valuable additional languages. Foreign nationals normally need an employment visa or residence authorisation arranged with employer sponsorship before starting work; requirements should be confirmed with the Sri Lankan mission and immigration authorities. Relocating staff should budget for housing, transport, healthcare and utilities, and clarify accommodation, meals, insurance, service charge and airfare benefits in the employment contract. Public transport is affordable, while traffic can be heavy in Colombo.
