Destination Guide

Penang is a Malaysian island connected to the mainland by bridges and ferries, and is one of the country’s best-known tourism and hospitality centres. Job opportunities are strongest in hotels, restaurants, tourism, retail, healthcare, education, technology and shared services, with major activity around George Town and Batu Ferringhi. The island blends Malay, Chinese, Indian and international influences, reflected in its festivals, temples, mosques, architecture and famous street food. Lifestyle is generally relaxed, with beaches, heritage streets, hiking and a lively dining scene, although traffic can be heavy and rents vary by neighbourhood. Foreign employees normally need an employer-sponsored Employment Pass, arranged through the company and Malaysian immigration authorities before working. Relocating staff should budget for housing, transport, insurance and school fees where relevant. English is widely used in business, while Malay and several Chinese languages are common locally.
