Destination Guide

Penang Island is one of Malaysia’s most attractive locations for hospitality careers, with opportunities in hotels, resorts, restaurants, events, tourism and wellness. George Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, combines colonial architecture, Chinese, Malay and Indian traditions, vibrant festivals and one of the country’s best food scenes. Life is generally more relaxed and affordable than in Kuala Lumpur, although popular areas can be busy and housing costs vary. Beaches and resorts are concentrated around Batu Ferringhi, while George Town offers better access to culture, dining and transport. Foreign nationals normally need an employer-sponsored Malaysian work permit and should not begin employment before approval. Relocating staff should confirm salary, accommodation, medical coverage, tax, leave and transport arrangements with the employer. English is widely used in hotels, while Malay and Mandarin are also valuable.
