Destination Guide

Indonesia offers varied opportunities in hotels, resorts, tourism, events, restaurants and corporate sales, especially in Bali, Jakarta, Surabaya, Lombok and the Riau Islands. Bali is popular with expatriates for its beaches, international community and relaxed lifestyle, while Jakarta provides stronger corporate and MICE opportunities but has heavier traffic and a faster pace. Indonesian culture values hospitality, respect, community and religious diversity; learning basic Bahasa Indonesia is highly useful. Living costs vary, with Bali and Jakarta generally more expensive than secondary cities. Foreign employees normally need employer sponsorship and an approved work permit and stay permit before starting work; requirements can change, so confirm details with the employer and Indonesian immigration authorities. Relocation planning should include accommodation, healthcare, insurance, tax registration and local banking.
