Destination Guide

Australia offers opportunities in banking, technology, healthcare, construction, education, professional services, tourism and skilled trades. Major employment centres include Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Canberra; regional areas may offer additional opportunities and a lower cost of living. Australian workplace culture is generally practical, relatively informal and focused on punctuality, teamwork, safety and work-life balance. Lifestyle varies from busy metropolitan living to coastal, rural and outdoor communities, with beaches, national parks and diverse food and cultural scenes. Living costs, especially rent, are high in Sydney and Melbourne. Skilled migrants commonly use employer-sponsored, skilled independent, state-nominated or working-holiday pathways, depending on occupation, age and eligibility. A valid work right is required before employment begins. New arrivals should budget for accommodation, transport, health cover and visa costs, and verify requirements through the Australian Department of Home Affairs.
