Destination Guide

Malaysia offers varied opportunities for software developers, particularly in Kuala Lumpur, Cyberjaya, Penang and Johor, where technology, engineering, shared services and multinational companies are concentrated. Penang is popular for its electronics and technology sector, while Langkawi offers a slower, tourism-focused lifestyle. Sabah and Sarawak provide attractive island and nature-oriented living, although technology roles are more limited than on the peninsula. Malaysian culture is multicultural, with Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous influences, and English is widely used in professional workplaces. Living costs are generally moderate, with Kuala Lumpur being more expensive than smaller cities. Foreign employees usually need an employer-sponsored Employment Pass; the company normally handles the application, subject to eligibility and approval. Bring certified qualifications and employment documents, and confirm visa conditions before relocating. Public transport is strongest in Kuala Lumpur and Penang, while island locations often require a car or motorbike.
