Destination Guide

Malaysia offers opportunities in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor and other technology hubs, particularly in software engineering, cloud services, data, cybersecurity, consulting, shared services and manufacturing technology. Life is generally affordable compared with Singapore or many Western countries, although central Kuala Lumpur housing can be costly. Malaysia has a multicultural society shaped by Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous traditions, with Malay as the official language and English widely used in business. Popular islands include Langkawi, Penang, Tioman and Perhentian, each offering beaches, food and outdoor activities; Penang also has a strong technology and expatriate community. Employees normally need employer sponsorship for an Employment Pass, while students may require a student pass and separate approval for permitted work. Before relocating, confirm sponsorship, salary, insurance, tax status and dependent arrangements. Public transport is strongest in major cities, while island living may require a car or ferry access.
