Destination Guide

Malaysia offers strong technology opportunities in Kuala Lumpur, Cyberjaya, Penang and Johor, particularly in software engineering, data, cloud, shared services and consulting. For island living, Penang is the most practical choice, combining established technology employers, good international connectivity, beaches and a lively food culture. Langkawi offers a slower, scenic lifestyle but fewer professional opportunities, while Sabah and Sarawak provide attractive nature-focused living with smaller technology markets. Malaysian culture is multicultural, with Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous influences, and English is widely used in business. Living costs are generally moderate, though central Kuala Lumpur and popular Penang areas are more expensive. Foreign professionals usually need employer sponsorship for an Employment Pass, with qualifications and salary requirements applying. Relocating staff should confirm visa rules, healthcare coverage, tax obligations, housing and schooling before accepting an offer.
