Destination Guide

Malaysia offers opportunities in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor, and other urban areas, particularly in software engineering, cloud, SAP, data, cybersecurity, shared services, and digital consulting. For island living, Penang combines a strong technology sector with heritage neighborhoods, beaches, diverse food, and a relatively relaxed lifestyle. Langkawi is quieter and more scenic, but has fewer specialized technology jobs. Malaysian culture is multicultural, with Malay, Chinese, Indian, and international influences; English is widely used in professional settings. Living costs are generally moderate, though central Kuala Lumpur and popular Penang districts cost more. Foreign professionals usually need an employer-sponsored Employment Pass, with the employer handling much of the application process. Before relocating, confirm salary, health coverage, tax treatment, dependants’ eligibility, accommodation, and whether remote work is permitted. Public transport is strongest in Kuala Lumpur and limited on smaller islands.
