Destination Guide

Malaysia offers strong technology opportunities in Kuala Lumpur, Cyberjaya, Penang and Johor, especially in software development, cloud services, shared services, consulting and engineering. Penang is an attractive island location with a substantial technology and manufacturing economy, lower living costs than Kuala Lumpur, excellent food and a relaxed lifestyle. Langkawi offers beaches and a slower pace, but fewer professional technology roles. Malaysian culture is multicultural, welcoming and family-oriented, with Malay, Chinese, Indian and international influences. English is widely used in business. Living costs are moderate, although central Kuala Lumpur and popular expatriate areas are more expensive. Foreign professionals generally need employer sponsorship for an Employment Pass; the employer normally handles the application and supporting documents. Candidates should confirm salary, medical coverage, tax obligations, relocation assistance and work authorization before accepting an offer. Malaysia’s tropical climate, public transport in major cities and plentiful island travel make it appealing for relocation.
