Destination Guide

Malaysia offers opportunities in engineering, renewable energy, construction, technology, shared services and consulting, especially around Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Penang and Sabah or Sarawak. For island living, Penang is popular for its strong professional community, heritage culture, beaches and relatively convenient lifestyle. Langkawi is more relaxed and tourism-focused, while parts of Sabah and Sarawak offer nature, outdoor activities and growing infrastructure projects. Malaysian culture is multicultural, with Malay, Chinese, Indian and Indigenous influences; English is widely used in business, although learning basic Malay is helpful. Living costs are generally moderate, with Kuala Lumpur and Penang costing more than smaller cities. Foreign professionals normally need employer-sponsored authorization, commonly an Employment Pass, and should not begin work before approval. Relocating employees should confirm medical checks, dependants’ passes, taxation, accommodation and insurance with the employer. Weather is tropical, hot and humid year-round, with seasonal monsoon rainfall.
