Destination Guide

Malaysia offers technology opportunities mainly in Kuala Lumpur, Cyberjaya, Penang and Johor, with roles in software engineering, testing, cloud, cybersecurity, data and consulting. For an island lifestyle, Penang is the most practical choice: it combines a strong technology sector with historic George Town, beaches, diverse food and a relatively relaxed pace. Langkawi offers beautiful scenery and a quieter lifestyle, but has fewer specialised technology jobs and may require remote work or travel. Malaysian culture is multicultural, with Malay, Chinese, Indian and international influences; English is widely used in professional settings. Living costs are generally moderate, though central Kuala Lumpur and popular Penang areas are more expensive. Foreign professionals normally need employer-sponsored authorisation, such as an Employment Pass, before working. Employers typically handle the application, while qualifications, salary and contract details affect eligibility. Research healthcare, housing, transport and tax requirements before relocating.
