Destination Guide

Malaysia offers opportunities in shared services, SAP consulting, finance operations, technology, engineering and customer support, particularly in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor and Cyberjaya. Its culture combines Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous influences, with English widely used in professional settings. Lifestyle costs are generally lower than in Singapore or many Western cities, although Kuala Lumpur housing and international schooling can be expensive. Malaysia has tropical weather, varied food, beaches and accessible islands such as Langkawi, Penang and Tioman. Foreign professionals normally require employer-sponsored work authorization, commonly an Employment Pass, and should secure approval before starting work. Employers often assist with visa paperwork, but requirements depend on salary, qualifications and nationality. New arrivals should budget for deposits, transport, healthcare insurance and initial accommodation. Major cities have reliable infrastructure, shopping and international communities, while island locations offer a slower pace but fewer corporate job opportunities.
