Destination Guide

Malaysia offers strong opportunities in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor and Cyberjaya, particularly in technology consulting, shared services, manufacturing, finance, engineering and digital transformation. Although Malaysia is a peninsula and part of Borneo rather than one island, it has popular island destinations including Langkawi, Penang, Tioman and Sabah’s coastal islands. The culture is multicultural, with Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous influences, and English is widely used in professional settings. Living costs are moderate compared with many international business hubs, while food, public transport and healthcare are generally accessible. Kuala Lumpur provides the widest career market and international connections; Penang offers a slower lifestyle and strong technology and manufacturing sectors. Foreign professionals normally need employer-sponsored work authorisation, such as an Employment Pass, before starting work. Employers usually support the application and relocation process, but requirements and approval times can vary.
