Working in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka offers career opportunities in apparel manufacturing, information technology, engineering, finance, tourism, logistics, healthcare, and business services. Colombo and nearby areas provide the widest range of professional roles, while industrial zones and regional cities support manufacturing and supply-chain careers. The country has a warm tropical climate, diverse communities, and a culture that values family, hospitality, food, and religious traditions. Living costs are generally lower than in many international business centres, although Colombo is more expensive than rural areas. English is widely used in professional workplaces, alongside Sinhala and Tamil. Foreign nationals normally need an employment or appropriate residence visa arranged with employer support; tourist visas do not permit employment. Interns should confirm sponsorship, accommodation, insurance, and local registration requirements before relocating. Public transport is affordable, while traffic can be heavy in Colombo.
