Destination Guide

Sri Lanka offers opportunities in hotels, resorts, restaurants, tourism, events, technology, education and international services, particularly in Colombo, Galle, Kandy and resort areas. The island has a rich blend of Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslim and colonial influences, with Buddhist, Hindu, Christian and Islamic traditions shaping everyday culture. Life is generally social and community-oriented, while the climate is tropical and varies by region and monsoon season. Living costs are lower than in many Western countries, although central Colombo and imported goods can be relatively expensive. Foreign nationals normally need an employer-sponsored work visa or residence authorisation before taking employment; requirements should be confirmed with Sri Lankan immigration and the employer. Relocating staff should arrange a valid passport, employment contract, medical or background documents where required, suitable insurance and accommodation. English is widely used in business and hotels, while Sinhala and Tamil are the main local languages.
