Destination Guide

Japan offers culinary, hotel, tourism, and service opportunities, especially in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Hokkaido, Okinawa, and major resort areas. Professional chefs can find work in hotels, restaurants, ryokan, bakeries, and catering, although Japanese language ability significantly improves job prospects and everyday independence. Japanese culture values punctuality, cleanliness, teamwork, respect, and careful attention to detail. Life is generally safe and convenient, with excellent public transport, but Tokyo accommodation and commuting costs can be high. Employees should budget for rent, utilities, transport, health insurance, pension, and taxes. Foreign workers normally need an employer-sponsored status of residence, such as Skilled Labor for qualified chefs or another suitable work category; a tourist visa does not permit employment. Confirm sponsorship, salary, housing, working hours, and overtime terms before accepting an offer. Relocation usually requires a passport, Certificate of Eligibility, visa application, residence registration, and a Japanese bank account.
