Destination Guide

Kota Kinabalu is the capital of Sabah on Malaysian Borneo, one of the world’s great tropical island regions. Hospitality, tourism, aviation, retail, healthcare, education, construction and marine-related businesses provide employment opportunities, especially for people with hotel, finance, technical and language skills. Sabah combines Malay, Chinese, Indigenous and international influences, with a relaxed lifestyle, affordable local food, markets and easy access to beaches, islands, rainforests and Mount Kinabalu. English is widely used in hotels, while Malay is the national language. Foreign employees normally need an employment pass sponsored by their employer; approval depends on the role, qualifications and Malaysian immigration requirements. Relocating staff should budget for accommodation, transport, insurance and document processing. Kota Kinabalu is generally more affordable than Kuala Lumpur, although imported goods and premium housing can be expensive.
