Destination Guide

The Maldives offers employment opportunities mainly in resorts, hotels, restaurants, diving, watersports, housekeeping, engineering, food and beverage, finance and guest services. Resort life is international and structured, with employees commonly living on a private staff island or staff village rather than in a local community. Maldivian culture is shaped by Islam, strong family ties, fishing traditions and island hospitality; modest clothing and respectful behaviour are important outside resort areas. Lifestyle is tropical and scenic, but remote: transport between islands can be limited and imported goods may be expensive. Foreign workers generally need an employer-sponsored Employment Approval and work permit; entering as a tourist does not authorize employment. Employers often arrange accommodation, meals, airport transfers, medical checks and permit processing, but terms vary. Confirm salary, service charge, leave, flights, insurance and contract conditions before relocating.
