Destination Guide

Labuan Bajo is a small coastal town on Flores Island and the main gateway to Komodo National Park. Job opportunities are strongest in hotels, resorts, restaurants, diving, tours, transport, maintenance and construction, with tourism experience and English offering an advantage. Life is relaxed but remote compared with Bali or Jakarta; expect warm weather, seasonal rain, limited shopping and a close-knit community. Local culture includes Manggarai traditions, strong family ties and predominantly Christian communities, alongside Indonesia’s wider Muslim and multicultural society. Popular activities include island-hopping, diving, hiking and visiting beaches and viewpoints. International workers normally need an employer-sponsored work permit and KITAS; working on a tourist visa is not permitted. Employers may assist with documentation, accommodation, meals and airport transfers, but this varies. Before relocating, confirm salary, service charge, housing, insurance, contract length, flights and medical coverage, and budget for occasional travel to larger Indonesian cities.
