Destination Guide

Japan offers opportunities in technology, telecommunications, finance, consulting, engineering, healthcare, tourism, education, and international business. Tokyo provides the widest range of professional roles, while Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, and Sapporo offer lower-cost alternatives with strong local economies. Workplace culture often values punctuality, preparation, teamwork, respect for hierarchy, and careful communication, although international companies may operate more flexibly. Lifestyle is convenient and safe, with excellent public transport, varied food, efficient healthcare, and a mix of urban and natural attractions. Living costs are highest in Tokyo, especially for housing. Foreign professionals generally need an employer-sponsored work visa, such as the Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services status; eligibility depends on qualifications and job duties. Employers commonly assist with sponsorship, onboarding, and relocation, but candidates should budget for deposits, initial housing costs, registration, and administrative procedures. Learning Japanese is highly beneficial for daily life and career progression.
