Destination Guide

The United Arab Emirates is not an island, but Dubai offers a highly international lifestyle with excellent career opportunities in hotels, restaurants, tourism, events, retail and business services. The country’s culture blends Gulf traditions with a large expatriate community; modest dress and respectful behaviour are important, particularly during Ramadan and in public places. Dubai has modern housing, extensive public transport, beaches, shopping, nightlife and year-round sunshine, although summers are extremely hot. Most overseas employees need employer-sponsored residence and work visas; the employer commonly arranges the work permit, medical examination, Emirates ID and residency processing. Relocating employees should confirm housing allowances, insurance, transport, annual leave and return-flight benefits before accepting an offer. Salaries are generally tax-free for individuals, but living costs, especially rent and schooling, can be high. English is widely used in business, while Arabic is the official language.
