Destination Guide

Penang is Malaysia’s best-known island destination and combines beaches, heritage and a lively food culture. Job opportunities are concentrated in hotels, resorts, restaurants, tourism, events, education, healthcare, technology and shared services. George Town offers cafés, galleries, colonial architecture and excellent street food, while Batu Ferringhi provides a relaxed resort lifestyle with beaches, water activities and a large expatriate community. Malaysian and English are widely used, and the island is culturally diverse, with Malay, Chinese, Indian and international influences. Living costs are moderate compared with Kuala Lumpur, although accommodation near the beach or George Town is more expensive. Foreign professionals normally need an employer-sponsored Employment Pass; the company must obtain approval before employment begins. Applicants should confirm visa eligibility, salary, housing, insurance and relocation assistance in writing. Malaysia is warm year-round, with heavier rain during monsoon periods, and reliable transport links connect Penang with the mainland and Kuala Lumpur.
