Destination Guide

Japan offers strong opportunities in technology, digital marketing, software, finance, tourism, manufacturing and international business, especially in Tokyo, Osaka, Yokohama, Nagoya and Fukuoka. Workplace culture values reliability, preparation, teamwork and respect for hierarchy, though international companies are generally more flexible. Daily life is safe and convenient, with excellent public transport, varied food, healthcare and dependable public services. Tokyo is highly connected but expensive; regional cities usually offer lower housing costs and a slower pace. Foreign professionals typically need an appropriate work visa, commonly the Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services visa, sponsored by an employer. Highly skilled professionals may qualify for preferential treatment under Japan’s points-based system. Relocation normally involves securing employment, arranging housing, registering an address and enrolling in health insurance and pension systems. Learning practical Japanese greatly improves workplace communication and everyday life, even when English is used professionally.
