Destination Guide

Batam is an Indonesian island in the Riau Archipelago, positioned close to Singapore and linked by regular ferry services. Hospitality, tourism, retail, manufacturing, logistics, maritime services, and customer support provide many employment opportunities. Daily life is generally more affordable than Singapore, with a relaxed coastal lifestyle, shopping centers, seafood restaurants, mosques, churches, and diverse communities. Indonesian is the main language, while English is useful in hotels and international businesses. New arrivals should budget for housing, transport, health insurance, and local registration; accommodation may sometimes be provided by an employer. Foreign nationals must have an Indonesian employer sponsor the appropriate work authorization, including a work permit and KITAS where applicable. Tourist or business visas do not normally permit employment. Before relocating, confirm salary, service charge, accommodation, contract terms, tax treatment, and visa sponsorship directly with the hotel.
