Destination Guide

Yogyakarta is on Java, Indonesia's most populous island and a major centre for education, culture and tourism. Job opportunities are strongest in hospitality, tourism, education, technology, manufacturing, retail and digital services. The city is known for Javanese traditions, batik, gamelan, temples, art and affordable local food. Lifestyle is generally relaxed and less expensive than Jakarta or Bali, with good cafés, cultural attractions and access to beaches and mountains, although traffic and rainy-season flooding can occur. Foreign employees normally need an employer-sponsored work permit and an appropriate work visa or stay permit; working on a tourist visa is not permitted. Employers usually guide the immigration process, but applicants should confirm current Indonesian regulations before moving. Housing ranges from inexpensive local rooms to serviced apartments, and international schools and healthcare are available, though major medical treatment may require travel to larger centres.
