Destination Guide

Surabaya is on Java, Indonesia's most populous and economically active island. The city offers opportunities in hotels, restaurants, events, tourism, manufacturing, logistics, education and corporate services, while nearby destinations such as Malang, Mount Bromo and Bali support travel-related work. Java has a diverse culture shaped by Javanese, Madurese, Chinese-Indonesian and other communities. Life in Surabaya is urban and relatively affordable compared with Jakarta or Bali, with extensive food, shopping and transport options; traffic and heat can be challenging. Foreign employees generally need an employer-sponsored work authorization and appropriate Indonesian visa or stay permit before starting work. Employers normally assist with immigration procedures, but applicants should verify current requirements with the Indonesian embassy and the company. Relocation planning should include accommodation, health insurance, tax, banking and local language basics.
