Destination Guide

Qatar is a modern peninsula rather than an island, offering strong opportunities in hospitality, tourism, aviation, retail, construction, healthcare, education and energy. Doha is the main employment center, with modern malls, museums, international restaurants, beaches and major sporting venues. The culture is welcoming but conservative: modest clothing is advisable in public places, and local customs, Islamic practices and Ramadan etiquette should be respected. Summers are extremely hot, while winters are comfortable and popular for outdoor activities. Most overseas employees need an employer-sponsored work visa and residence permit; the employer commonly arranges medical checks, documentation and travel procedures. Before relocating, confirm salary, accommodation, meals, transport, insurance, leave and contract terms in writing. Qatar has no personal income tax on salaries, but living costs can be high, particularly for private housing. Public transport is improving, and English is widely used in workplaces.
