Destination Guide

Qatar is a modern Gulf country rather than an island, offering opportunities in hospitality, construction, aviation, retail, healthcare, education and energy. Doha is the main employment centre and has an international population, modern shopping areas, beaches, museums and a growing dining and entertainment scene. Local culture is welcoming but conservative; modest dress, respect for Islamic traditions and awareness of Ramadan customs are important. Summers are extremely hot, while winters are pleasant and suitable for outdoor activities. Most overseas employees receive employer-sponsored work visas, with the company usually arranging residency procedures, medical checks and documentation. Before relocating, confirm the contract, salary, accommodation, transport, working hours, insurance and annual leave. Qatar has no personal income tax on salaries, although living costs can be high. Public transport is improving, and English is widely used in workplaces.
