Destination Guide

Hong Kong is a densely populated coastal city with excellent opportunities in luxury hotels, restaurants, catering, events and tourism, especially for experienced chefs. Its culture blends Cantonese traditions with international influences; etiquette, punctuality and respect for hierarchy are valued, while English is widely used in hospitality. Life is fast-paced, safe and convenient, with efficient public transport, abundant dining and shopping, hiking trails, beaches and vibrant neighbourhoods. Rent can be high, particularly on Hong Kong Island and in Kowloon, so employer accommodation or a housing allowance is valuable. Foreign professionals normally need an employment visa arranged by an eligible sponsoring company, with approval based on qualifications, experience and a confirmed job offer. Dependants may generally apply for dependant visas. New arrivals should prepare qualifications, references, passport documents and health or background records where required. Typhoon warnings and humid summers are part of everyday life, but public services and infrastructure are excellent.
