Malaysia is not one island but a country divided between Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia on Borneo, with attractive islands such as Langkawi, Penang, Tioman, Redang, Sabah’s islands and Sarawak’s coastal destinations. Kuala Lumpur and nearby Selangor offer the strongest opportunities in banking, technology, shared services, finance, healthcare, manufacturing and professional services. Malaysian culture is multicultural, with Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous influences, and English is widely used in business. Lifestyle costs are moderate compared with Singapore, although central Kuala Lumpur housing is more expensive. Public transport is convenient in major cities, while food, beaches and nature provide excellent leisure options. Foreign professionals normally require an employer-sponsored Employment Pass; the employer handles much of the application process, and approval depends on salary, qualifications and role. Dependants may qualify for related passes.
