Destination Guide

Sri Lanka offers opportunities in apparel manufacturing, engineering, information technology, tourism, logistics, finance, healthcare and business services. The island has a diverse culture influenced by Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslim and colonial traditions, with Sinhala and Tamil as official languages and English widely used professionally. Lifestyle ranges from busy commercial centers such as Colombo to relaxed coastal and hill-country communities. Living costs are generally lower than in many Western countries, although imported goods and accommodation in central Colombo can be expensive. Foreign employees normally require an employment visa or residence authorization sponsored by the hiring company; working before approval is not permitted. Employers usually assist with immigration paperwork, contracts and relocation guidance. Sri Lanka has tropical weather, attractive beaches, wildlife parks, tea-growing mountains and strong public transport links, though traffic and occasional economic disruption should be considered when planning a move.
