Destination Guide

Kota Kinabalu is located on Malaysian Borneo, on the island of Sabah, rather than on Peninsular Malaysia. The city offers opportunities in hotels, restaurants, tourism, retail, healthcare, education, aviation, logistics and marine activities. Sabah’s culture is diverse, combining Malay, Chinese and many Indigenous communities, with festivals, local markets and excellent seafood. Lifestyle is generally relaxed and outdoor-oriented, with access to beaches, Mount Kinabalu, rainforest and nearby islands such as Gaya and Manukan. Living costs are usually lower than in Kuala Lumpur, although central housing and imported goods can be expensive. Foreign employees normally need an employer-sponsored Employment Pass, and the employer handles much of the application process; approval must be obtained before starting work. Applicants should verify visa rules, contract benefits, accommodation, healthcare and relocation support with the hotel. English is widely used in tourism, while Malay is valuable for daily life.
