Destination Guide

Kota Kinabalu, on Malaysian Borneo, offers hospitality, tourism, retail, finance and service-sector opportunities, with extra demand during holiday periods. Life is generally relaxed and affordable compared with Kuala Lumpur, with beaches, island trips, seafood markets, shopping malls and access to Sabah’s rainforests and Mount Kinabalu. Sabah has a diverse culture combining Malay, Chinese, Indigenous and international communities; English is commonly used in hotels, while Malay is the national language. Employers normally arrange or sponsor the appropriate Malaysian work pass for eligible foreign workers, and approval must be obtained before employment begins. Requirements vary by nationality and position, so confirm details with Marriott and Malaysian immigration authorities. Relocating employees should budget for accommodation deposits, transport, medical coverage and flights. Local rental costs vary considerably by neighborhood, and public transport is more limited than in major Malaysian cities.
