Destination Guide

Indonesia is an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, with the main employment centres on Java, Bali, Sumatra, Kalimantan and Sulawesi. Jakarta, on Java, offers the widest range of corporate, hospitality, finance, technology and retail opportunities, although traffic, humidity and a fast-paced lifestyle are significant considerations. Bali is especially strong for tourism, resorts, restaurants and wellness, while other islands provide opportunities in mining, manufacturing, marine tourism and agriculture. Indonesian culture values hospitality, respect for elders, community and religious diversity; modest, considerate behaviour is appreciated. Living costs vary widely, with Jakarta and Bali generally more expensive than regional cities. Foreign nationals normally need an employer-sponsored work permit and appropriate visa, and must not work on a tourist visa. Before relocating, confirm sponsorship, salary, housing, healthcare, tax obligations and contract terms, and research local transport and language requirements.
