Destination Guide

The Maldives offers employment mainly in luxury resorts, hotels, restaurants, diving, watersports, housekeeping, engineering, wellness, finance and guest services. Resort life is international and structured, with staff accommodation, meals, uniforms and transport commonly included. The culture is welcoming but respectful of Islamic traditions; modest dress is appropriate on local islands, alcohol is generally restricted outside resorts, and Friday is the main weekly day of worship. Life on a resort island is peaceful and social, but remote, with limited shopping and healthcare compared with major cities. Foreign employees normally need an employer-sponsored work permit and employment approval before working legally; tourist visas do not authorize employment. Employers usually arrange documentation, airport transfers and accommodation, but candidates should confirm contract terms, insurance, airfare, service charge and leave entitlement. Malé and Hulhumalé provide broader services, while resort transfers may involve speedboats or seaplanes.
