Destination Guide

Malaysia offers opportunities in hotels, resorts, restaurants, diving, wellness, tourism, retail, and customer service, especially in Langkawi, Penang, Sabah, and the Perhentian and Redang island areas. The culture is multicultural, with Malay, Chinese, Indian, Indigenous, and international influences. English is widely used in tourism, while learning basic Malay helps with daily life and workplace relationships. Island living usually means a relaxed lifestyle, warm weather, affordable local food, beaches, and outdoor activities, although transport, healthcare, shopping, and internet access can be more limited than in Kuala Lumpur. Foreign nationals generally need an employer-sponsored Employment Pass or another approved work permit before starting employment. Confirm eligibility, salary requirements, accommodation, insurance, and relocation costs with Shangri-La and Malaysian immigration authorities before moving.
