Destination Guide

Malaysia offers varied opportunities in hotels, resorts, restaurants, tourism, retail, technology and shared services. Popular island destinations include Langkawi, Penang, Tioman, Redang and parts of Sabah, while Kuala Lumpur remains the main corporate and employment centre. Malaysian culture is multicultural, with Malay, Chinese, Indian and Indigenous influences reflected in food, festivals, languages and everyday life. The lifestyle is generally relaxed, warm and affordable compared with many major international cities, although island living can be quieter and more seasonal. English is widely used in business and hospitality. Foreign employees normally need an employment pass sponsored by their employer; requirements depend on nationality, salary and job level, so approval should be confirmed before relocation. Employers may assist with paperwork, accommodation and flights. New arrivals should research healthcare, transport, schooling and taxation, and consider whether a resort location or mainland city better suits their career and lifestyle.
