Destination Guide

Malaysia offers opportunities in hotels, resorts, restaurants, tourism, retail, logistics, technology and business services. Popular island destinations include Langkawi, Penang, Tioman, Redang and parts of Sabah, while Kuala Lumpur is the main urban employment centre. The culture is multicultural, with Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous influences, and English is commonly used in tourism workplaces. Lifestyle costs are generally moderate, although island accommodation and transport can be more expensive. Employees should expect warm, humid weather and seasonal monsoon conditions. Foreign workers normally need an employer-sponsored work permit and must not begin work before approval; requirements depend on nationality, sector and immigration rules. Employers often assist with permits, medical checks and relocation details. Candidates should verify contracts, accommodation, transport, service charges and visa responsibilities directly with Shangri-La before travelling.
