Destination Guide

Jakarta is on Java, Indonesia’s most developed and commercially active island, with strong opportunities in hospitality, tourism, sales, finance, technology and international business. The city offers excellent restaurants, shopping, entertainment and transport links, although traffic, humidity and a fast-paced lifestyle can be challenging. Indonesian culture places importance on politeness, community, family and religious diversity; learning basic Bahasa Indonesia is highly useful. Living costs vary considerably, with central areas and international schools being expensive, while local food and services remain affordable. Employees normally need an employer-sponsored work permit and appropriate limited-stay visa, commonly arranged through the company before starting work. Foreigners should not work on a tourist visa. Candidates should confirm sponsorship, medical requirements, tax obligations, accommodation support and contract terms directly with Shangri-La. Java also provides easy access to cultural sites, mountains and beaches, while Bali and other islands are popular weekend or holiday destinations.
