Destination Guide

Malaysia is a diverse destination rather than a single island, combining the mainland with island locations and Malaysian Borneo. Hospitality opportunities are strongest in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi, Kota Kinabalu, and resort areas, particularly in hotels, restaurants, events, and tourism. The culture is multicultural, with Malay, Chinese, Indian, indigenous, and international influences. Lifestyle costs are moderate compared with many global cities, although central Kuala Lumpur and popular islands can be more expensive. Beaches, rainforests, food markets, and outdoor activities are major attractions. Foreign employees generally need an employment pass sponsored by the employer, and approval must be obtained before starting work. Relocating candidates should budget for housing deposits, transport, insurance, and document processing. English is widely used in hotels, while Malay is the national language. Shift work and seasonal demand are common in resort destinations.
