Destination Guide

Malaysia offers varied career opportunities in banking, technology, manufacturing, tourism, shared services and professional services. Kuala Lumpur and the Klang Valley are the main employment hubs, while Penang, Johor and Sabah also have active job markets. The country combines Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous traditions, with festivals, diverse food and generally welcoming communities. Living costs are moderate compared with Singapore, although central Kuala Lumpur housing is more expensive. Public transport is strongest in major cities; outside them, driving is often more practical. Malaysia is a peninsula and also includes Borneo states, rather than being one island. Foreign employees normally need an employer-sponsored Employment Pass, while Malaysians can relocate freely within the country. New arrivals should confirm contract terms, accommodation, transport, healthcare and visa requirements before moving.
