Destination Guide

Sri Lanka offers opportunities in apparel and manufacturing, information technology, tourism, finance, logistics, healthcare and education, with Colombo and nearby industrial zones being the main employment centres. The culture is warm and community-oriented, influenced by Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim and colonial traditions. English is widely used in business, while Sinhala and Tamil are the national languages. Living costs are generally lower than in many major international cities, though Colombo housing and imported goods can be expensive. The island provides beaches, mountains, wildlife parks and historic cities, with a tropical climate and varied regional weather. Foreign nationals normally need an appropriate employment visa or residence approval arranged with employer support; tourist status does not permit regular employment. Relocating candidates should confirm sponsorship, medical requirements, accommodation, taxation and dependent arrangements before accepting an offer. Public transport is affordable, but traffic can be heavy around Colombo.
