Destination Guide

The United Arab Emirates is not an island but a federation of seven emirates, with Dubai offering particularly strong opportunities in hotels, tourism, events, retail, aviation, finance and technology. The culture combines Islamic traditions, Emirati hospitality and a highly international population. Dubai provides modern housing, extensive shopping, beaches, restaurants and entertainment, although living costs can be high. Most overseas employees receive an employer-sponsored residence visa, work permit, medical screening and Emirates ID; dependants may be sponsored subject to salary and immigration rules. Employers may also offer accommodation, transport, health insurance, flights or relocation support, but these benefits should be confirmed before accepting an offer. Respect for local customs, modest public behaviour and regulations concerning alcohol and photography is important. Summers are extremely hot, while winter offers more comfortable conditions for outdoor activities. Public transport is good in central areas, though many residents use taxis or cars.
